Plot Synopsis

Just after the Spring Festival in 1937, a new star named Xiao Baiyushuang suddenly emerged on the Shanghai opera stage. She was Li Zaiwen, the adopted daughter of Bai Yushuang, the then queen of Pingju Opera. She was bought into the family by Li Bian, Bai Yushuang's adoptive mother, when she was only five years old. Since Bai Yushuang didn't teach her the art, she learned Pingju Opera entirely by observing secretly. When Bai Yulu suddenly ran away to avoid an arranged marriage, she was temporarily "dragged" out to take the leading role in the performance at the tender age of 15. When the troupe returned north to Tianjin, Bai Yushuang made a comeback. Although she tried hard to change her acting style and avoid competing with Bai Yushuang on the same stage, she still couldn't match Bai Yushuang. As a result, she was sold by Li Bian to a tobacco merchant named Zhao Qinglai and was separated from the stage for a while.
