Plot Synopsis

In the early 1990s, Xiao Tianliang from the Second Machine Tool Factory in Jinhai was a well-known honest man. He had worked hard in the factory for over a decade without complaint, but still lived with his wife, children and mother-in-law in the tube-shaped apartment allocated by the factory. Recently, a two-bedroom, one-living-room apartment was vacated in the factory. Xiao Tianliang pleaded with many people in vain and was even humiliated in every possible way by the factory's senior management. Wang Qian, his wife who was unwilling to continue to "muddle along" with him, also chose to divorce him. Xiao Tianliang hit rock bottom in life.
