The Palace Cockfighting

Plot Synopsis

On the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of the Emperor of the Great Dragon Kingdom, an imperial edict was issued to hold a cockfighting competition, and a craze for cockfighting immediately swept through the民间. Zhang Laosan, a peasant, brought his mottled-feathered chicken into the palace to compete in the arena. Since the mottled-feathered chicken had to be given some wine before each fight, it quickly defeated two roosters. Princess Yueyue was so fond of it that she kept it in the palace. The mottled-feathered chicken, which was extremely fond of alcohol, made a complete fool of itself in the palace. Zhang Laosan and Gou Dan were then driven out of the palace gates. Prince Hui advised the Emperor that the mottled-feathered chicken should fight a duel with the golden rooster, and the Emperor readily agreed. Jia Cai, who was unaware of the mottled-feathered chicken's penchant for alcohol, in order to make the golden rooster win the championship, poured white wine down the mottled-feathered chicken's throat.
