Plot Synopsis

During the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, Kim Gyo-gak, the prince of the ancient Korean Silla Kingdom, left the secular life and became a monk out of grief and indignation due to the changes in the court, fratricidal strife, and the tragic death of his mother as well as the disappearance of his wife. In search of the true teachings of Buddhism, he sailed across the sea to the Tang Dynasty, traveling and studying. Finally, he came to Mount Jiuhua to found a Buddhist temple and promote Buddhism. His wife narrowly escaped death and managed to come to China after numerous hardships. However, they were fated to meet but not to be together. To fulfill Kim Gyo-gak's cause, she resolutely threw herself into a well to die for love. After experiencing all the miseries in life, Kim Gyo-gak finally reached the highest realm he had been pursuing and became the "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" worshiped by people. Since then, Mount Jiuhua has also become a sacred place of Buddhism.
