Plot Synopsis

Song Shijie, a Xiucai (a scholar who passed the imperial examination at the county level in ancient China), was a famous lawyer. However, for several years, his wife Hongying gave birth to a child at the beginning of the year but the child died at the end of the year. People said that it was all because Song Shijie, as a lawyer, distorted right and wrong, thus losing his hidden virtues. Therefore, Hongying strongly urged Song Shijie to give up his legal practice. The two then opened the Yue Lai Inn and since then stayed away from court affairs. One day, Song Shijie and his wife were boating on the lake and saved Yang Xiuzhen, a young woman who was attempting suicide. Yang Xiuzhen claimed that her husband Yao Er had been poisoned by her sister-in-law Yao Tianshi, and she herself had narrowly escaped being framed and had to flee. But she was left with no one to turn to, which led her to attempt suicide. Hongying had been a heroic woman in the greenwood before she got married and was still a chivalrous woman. S
