Plot Synopsis
In 1735 AD, Emperor Yongzheng suddenly passed away. After Emperor Qianlong ascended the throne, a series of astonishing and strange cases occurred one after another, such as "the granary being burned by the fire dragon", "the Yin soldiers borrowing grain", and "the ploughing oxen crying in the fields". In this time of crisis, Liu Tongxun, the Minister of Justice, took office with a solemn sense of mission (as if carrying a coffin, meaning taking on a heavy responsibility), and was in charge of investigating cases and providing disaster relief across the country. Mi He, the son of Mi Rucheng, the Vice Minister of Granaries, was well-versed in poetry and books. He had no intention of pursuing an official career but only wanted to roam the world. Having witnessed all kinds of hardships among the people, he finally resolved to become an upright official to save the people from dire straits.
